How a Roman shade is built in our workroom
A Roman shade is sewn, not assembled, so it starts where a drapery starts: face fabric cut on grain and pattern-matched, a lining that carries the light and the UV, and a construction that decides how the folds break. Flat folds read tailored and modern and show a large print at its best; relaxed folds swag softly at the bottom for a casual room; hobbled folds hold permanent overlapping pleats for a fuller, formal look. Hems are weighted to hang straight, seams disappear into the folds, and the headrail is sized to the exact opening for an inside or outside mount.
Lift is your choice: child-safe cordless, or a Lutron or Somfy motor on wired or battery power that stops at the fold positions we program. Linings run from light-filtering to thermal to full blackout, and every shade comes out of the same workroom as our draperies, so a Roman in the study can match the panels in the living room bolt for bolt.
Roman shades for South Florida rooms
Humidity and sun decide the fabric. Linens and cottons want a lining that carries the UV load; blackout linings turn a bedroom dark; light-filtering linings keep a living room glowing. Over a bathtub or in a kitchen we advise moisture-tolerant weaves, and on a west-facing window we line generously so the face fabric does not fade. Roman shades pair naturally with drapery panels in the same fabric, which is why our drapery clients in Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Boca Raton and Palm Beach order them for the secondary windows - kitchens, studies, baths and children's rooms.

Typically 8 to 12 inches depending on the drop and the fold style. When you want the glass fully clear, we mount above the frame so the stack sits on the wall.

Yes - same bolt, same workroom, same pattern repeat, so the shade in the kitchen and the panels in the living room read as one design.
Are motorized Roman shades quiet?
Lutron Sivoia QS Roman systems and Somfy Sonesse motors are near-silent, and each shade is programmed to stop at precise fold positions.
