Where Lutron earns its price, project by project
We install Lutron, Somfy and Crestron every week, so this is not a page that says Lutron for everything. It is the system we recommend without hesitation when a project looks like one of the five below. Where it is not the best fit, and what we use instead, follows right after.
1. New construction with an automation system
The best moment to choose Lutron is before the drywall closes. Sivoia QS takes power and data on one low-voltage run that lands at a Sivoia QS panel, and the shades live on the same HomeWorks keypads and scenes as the lighting, so one press moves the glass with the lights. At the Ritz-Carlton Residences, Sunny Isles, every roller and track runs on Sivoia QS under HomeWorks QS, integrated into the residence's Crestron system, with the pockets, the wiring and the programming coordinated with the general contractor and the AV integrator in the right order. 2. Large windows that need coupling
A wall of glass wider than one roller can carry is where most systems start to compromise. Sivoia QS runs from 20 in to 20 ft with coupling brackets, so several tubes can be joined and move as one elevation, and Intelligent Hembar Alignment holds every bottom bar within 1/8 in of its neighbours, moving or stopped. That is how the oceanfront mansion on Hillsboro Mile reads as one continuous fabric across every wall of glass: fourteen openings, one press on the keypad, the whole room answers.
3. Everything oversize
Lutron is built for the sizes that make other hardware nervous: rollers to 20 ft, drapery tracks to 18 ft with no splice carrying up to 175 lb of fabric on the D175 drive, and Palladiom's exposed hardware at floor-to-ceiling glass. The 12,000 sq ft oceanfront estate in Fort Lauderdale runs Palladiom on every window and customized Lutron tracks under imported sheers; in Turks and Caicos the largest custom roman on Lutron's roman-shade kit measured 112 by 118 in.
4. The best communication design
This is the part the client never sees, and the reason the system still answers the keypad ten years on. Wired Sivoia QS carries power and data on one 4-conductor QS link: every shade has its own address on the link and reports its position back to the system, with no batteries to change and no radio to drop out. Lutron's wireless lines share the Clear Connect radio that runs its lighting systems. The six villas on Big Ambergris Cay are hard-wired this way on myRoom XR: one press at the wall and every run in the villa answers.
5. High-end homes, and people who want perfection
Lutron is for the client who will notice a bottom bar a quarter inch out of line, or a motor they can hear from the bed. Palladiom runs under 35 dBA at 3 ft with hand-finished brackets that are meant to be seen; Sivoia QS under 44 dBA; sheer and blackout layers travel on independent tracks in sync, so a whole wall of sheers at the Ritz-Carlton Residences, Miami Beach opens as one gesture. That level of finish is why a Lutron project prices at roughly 1.6 times the same shades on wired Somfy in our quote engine, and why we quote it only where it earns that difference.
Where Lutron is not the best fit
None of this makes Lutron a bad system. It is engineered for wide spans, wired power and whole-home control, and that engineering has a cost in depth, in power and in price. These are the situations, from our own installs, where another system serves the client better.
No low-voltage wiring at the window
Lutron shades and drapery tracks run on low-voltage power from a Lutron supply. When a finished room offers nothing but a 120 V outlet, that supply still has to live somewhere: on one motorized track we sold, the transformer ended up in plain view, which a battery motor would have avoided entirely. For a track in a finished home we now start with the Somfy Irismo 45 WireFree, a rechargeable motor inside the track (up to 99 lb of drapery, 33 ft of track, about nine months per charge), or a Somfy Glydea that plugs into the existing outlet. For rollers, Somfy WireFree or Lutron's own Triathlon batteries keep the walls untouched.
Big shades on battery power
Triathlon is Lutron's battery roller, and up to its standard sizes (Lutron lists 19.5 to 108 in wide) it is excellent: fourteen of them dressed the Luxury Home in Boca Raton. Above that Lutron offers the Triathlon WIDR, to 144 in on 6 to 16 D-cells, and in our quotes it comes in at roughly 2.5 times the price of a standard Triathlon. On a wall of oversize glass with no wiring, that is where we price a Somfy WireFree or a wired Somfy Sonesse next to it before recommending anything, and where running a wire, if the building allows it, usually wins.
Shallow frames, and the size of the pockets
Lutron sizes its tubes and brackets for the widest shade each line can carry, which is what keeps a wide fabric flat and the motor working in its comfort zone. The price is depth. Lutron publishes about 3.5 in of projection for the smallest wired roller (Roller 64), 5 in for the Roller 100, 4 in of jamb for the Triathlon WIDR; many South Florida window frames are about 3 in deep, so the shade sits proud of the frame, and some clients do not like that look. A 38 mm Somfy Sonesse 30 tube tucks inside a 3 in frame. The same applies to recessed pockets, and it doubles for dual shades: Lutron's published dual pocket is 5.5 by 7.5 in for two Roller 64s and 7 by 11 in for two Roller 100s. A home that already runs on Crestron
Lutron integrates with Crestron, and at the Ritz-Carlton Sunny Isles that is exactly how it runs. But when the residence is a Crestron house from the start, Crestron's own QMT motors on Cresnet put every shade and track in the scenes natively, with status feedback and no second processor to integrate. That is why the St. Regis Longboat Key runs six Crestron QMT tracks and why every roller and the drapery track at Trump Tower III is Crestron in a recessed pocket. More on Crestron shading.
When the building gives you 120 V conduit and nothing else
Lutron's wired lines are low-voltage and want their own panel and home runs. In a tower where the developer ran 120 V conduit to the shade pockets and nothing else, a line-voltage motor uses what is there. At Salato in Pompano Beach, three units run Somfy Sonesse 50 RTS at 120 V, hard-wired through the building's conduit to a power panel in each unit, on 2.5-inch tubes for the 147-inch openings, with a TaHoma switch putting every room on Crestron and Google Home. Same result at the keypad, no second wiring system to invent.
Many ordinary windows, no integrator, a real budget
Lutron prices at roughly 1.6 times the same shades on wired Somfy in our quote engine. On a home with twenty standard windows, no automation processor and a budget that matters, wired Somfy delivers the same quiet, the same fabrics and the same schedules for meaningfully less, and the two systems can share a house: at Landmark Ranch Estates every roller runs on a Somfy dry-contact motor with a Lutron keypad in every room. Hembar alignment, explained
The hembar is the weighted bar at the bottom of a roller shade. On a wall of glass the eye does not see five shades, it sees one horizontal line, and a single bottom bar a quarter inch out of step breaks it. That line is harder to keep than it looks: as a shade winds up the roll gets fatter, so at the same motor speed the fabric travels faster; fabric weight, tube size and voltage differ from window to window; and ordinary motors have no way of knowing where their neighbours are. Start five of them together and they drift apart mid-travel and stop out of line.
Lutron's Intelligent Hembar Alignment closes that loop. A sensor reads the motor's speed 500 times per second, a microcontroller corrects the drive, and the motor's RPM is changed continuously as the roll diameter changes so the hembar itself travels at a constant speed. Every shade in a group moves at the same hembar speed and stops within 1/8 in of the others, on a preset or on a raise and lower command to any position, moving or stopped. It is built into every size and model of Sivoia QS, wired or wireless, and Triathlon battery shades compensate for fabric weight and battery voltage to hold the same line.
One detail we noticed in Lutron's own training: start the shades of a bank one after the other and the later ones catch the position of the first, then the whole wall finishes the travel together. Nobody is told about it, and everybody sees it. That is the difference between a wall that reads as one gesture, as at the oceanfront mansion on Hillsboro Mile with fourteen openings in one fabric, and a wall where the shades merely happen to be motorized.

Whose fabric is it? Lutron sells its shades with its own library, organised in collections (Classico, Gallery, Atelier, Architectural, Honeycomb, Honeycomb Essentials, Commercial and Wood Blinds). Many of the solar screens in it are woven by the two American mills behind our own fabric standard: Mermet (E Screen, M Screen, T Screen, Satiné, GreenScreen) and Phifer (SheerWeave); the designer, blackout, honeycomb and wood lines come from mills Lutron does not name, "leading fabric manufacturers all over the world" in its own words. When is Lutron not the best fit?
