Somfy SDN Explained: The Wired Shade Network for Serious Projects

Walk into a well-run office tower at noon and watch an entire glass facade of shades drop to exactly the same height, perfectly level, all at once. That is almost never radio. That is a wired network doing its job, and in the Somfy world, that network is called SDN: the Somfy Digital Network. As one of the few SDN Specialist certified companies in South Florida, here is what it actually is and when you should want it.
What SDN is, in plain words
SDN is Somfy's commercial-grade control system for motorized shades. Instead of each motor listening for a radio signal, every motor is physically connected to a low-voltage digital bus cable, the same industrial RS-485 style of communication that runs factories and building systems. Each motor on the bus has its own unique digital address, like an apartment number. A command can therefore be sent to one specific shade, to a group (every shade on the west facade, for example), or to the whole building, and it arrives every single time.
The parts, and what each one does
Sonesse ILT motors. The heart of the system. ILT stands for intelligent motor technology: these are Somfy's quiet Sonesse motors with digital intelligence built in. Each one knows its exact position and reports it back over the network, which is what makes perfect alignment across a wall of shades possible.
The bus cable. One small, inexpensive low-voltage cable that daisy-chains through the building, linking every motor, keypad, and controller. This is the "network" in Somfy Digital Network. No radio congestion, no range limits, no batteries.
Motor controllers and power panels. These feed power to the motors and connect them to the bus. In a large project they live in tidy rows in an electrical room, which is exactly how we like to hand a building over to a facilities team.
Keypads and interfaces. Wall switches, timers, and sun sensors that speak SDN directly. Press one button and a preprogrammed scene moves fifty shades to their exact positions.
Gateways. The bridge to everything else. Through a gateway, an SDN system talks to Crestron, Control4, a building management system, or TaHoma, so shades become part of lighting scenes, HVAC strategies, and scheduled sun management.
Why wired beats radio at scale
For two or ten shades, radio is fine; we install WireFree battery motors every week and love them. But at twenty, fifty, or three hundred shades, radio starts to show its limits: commands occasionally missed, no feedback about whether a shade actually moved, and alignment that drifts. On a wired bus, every command is confirmed, every position is known, and every shade on a facade stops at precisely the same height. Where SDN shines in South Florida
Office buildings and corporate floors, where facilities teams need scheduled sun control and one point of management. Hotels and restaurants, where hundreds of shades must behave identically for years. Condo amenity spaces, lobbies, and gyms. And large residences: a two-story oceanfront great room with a dozen oversized solar shades is exactly the kind of place where wired control and position feedback stop being luxuries and start being the difference between "smart home" and "why is one shade crooked again".
SDN or Lutron? An honest answer

SDN delivers commercial-grade wired reliability at a friendlier price point and is often the smartest specification for offices, hospitality, and large multi-shade projects.
