The fiberglass light-filtering weave, with a blackout partner

Vizela is the light-filtering fabric for a project that needs fiberglass fire listings rather than polyester ones. It is 100% textured fiberglass with an EVA coating, woven at under 1% openness, 94.5 inches wide and 8.7 oz per square yard, and it carries NFPA 701 TM#1, California Title 19 and CAN/ULC-S109, which none of the other Daylight weaves do. GREENGUARD Gold, RoHS lead free and antimicrobial testing to ASTM E2180 and ASTM G21 come with it, and UV blockage is about 99%.

The card is five colours: Blanc, Sahel, Mississippi, Chartreux and Loutre. Visible transmission runs 37% in Blanc down to 10% in Loutre, and solar reflectance 59% down to 21%, so the card covers a bright, glowing shade and a much quieter one. It publishes NRC 0.35, among the highest acoustic values in the library. The five colour names repeat exactly on Flocké, the fiberglass blackout, so a room can pair a Vizela daytime shade with a Flocké blackout in the identical colour.

Best Use & Limits

What Vizela does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Commercial rooms that need daylight and a fire schedule at once, and the domestic ones nobody should be able to see into: a bathroom, a street-facing bedroom, a stair window over a walkway. Blanc keeps a room brightest and Loutre gives the quietest light, with Chartreux, Sahel and Mississippi between them. Pick the colour by how bright you want that wall to read at midday.

Privacy

By day it is complete, with no view in and no view out in any of the five colours. After dark it depends on the colour, because a lit room shows silhouettes through a light-filtering weave and the pale end shows more of them. Blanc passes 37% of the visible light and Loutre 10%. Where a room has to be private and dark after sunset, Flocké in the same colour is the partner.

Glare control

It removes the direct beam and replaces it with a large, even, bright surface. That suits a corridor or a bathroom and works against a desk: Blanc, Sahel and Mississippi, at 32% to 37% visible transmission, turn a sunny window into a glowing panel. Loutre at 10% is far calmer. For a monitor facing real sun, a solar screen in front is the better arrangement.

Limitations

No view out, which rules it out on the window worth looking through. It is neither a solar screen nor a blackout: light passes and shapes read at night. At 94.5 inches it is the narrowest cloth on this page, so a wide opening becomes two shades with a light gap between them. For a room that has to go dark, pair it with a blackout shade.

Tv = visible light transmitted, Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed, Rv = visible light reflected, in percent, as published by Mermet USA for the fabric on its own. SHGC int. and SHGC ext. = solar heat gain coefficient of the fabric mounted inside or outside residential double glazing, from the same spec sheets; UPF = Mermet's ultraviolet protection rating where it publishes one. South Florida

Where Vizela works here

Vizela suits the rooms where a light-filtering shade has to pass a commercial specification: a condo common area, a clinic, an office, a hotel corridor. In a house we use it where a bathroom or a street-facing bedroom needs daylight and privacy and the project is already running fiberglass elsewhere. The 94.5-inch width is the thing to check first, because a wide opening will need two shades on one headrail.

Vizela is the fiberglass Daylight weave with screen-grade fire listings; Sofia and Elba Daylight are wider polyester textiles with softer texture and different listings.

Good to Know

Vizela: frequently asked

Why choose Vizela over Sofia or Elba Daylight?

Fire listings and construction. Vizela is fiberglass with an EVA coating and carries NFPA 701 TM#1, California Title 19 and CAN/ULC-S109; Sofia and Elba Daylight are polyester listed to ASTM E84 and California Technical Bulletin 117. For a commercial specification that calls for NFPA 701, Vizela is the light-filtering answer.

What pairs with it for night privacy?

Flocké, the fiberglass blackout, which carries the same five colour names: Blanc, Sahel, Mississippi, Chartreux and Loutre. Both are 94.5 inches wide, so the two shades match in a dual roller as well as in colour.

How wide can a Mermet Vizela shade be?

Mermet publishes standard roll widths of 94.5" (240 cm) for Vizela, so a single shade can run to about 94.5 inches wide before a seam or a second shade is needed. Wider openings are covered with two shades on one headrail programmed to move together, or with a seam placed where the mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in Vizela?

Vizela is a roller shade fabric. We source it directly from Mermet, so the same weave goes on Lutron, Somfy, Crestron or Vertilux motors or a manual chain, cut and finished in our Fort Lauderdale workroom and installed by our own team from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see Vizela samples before ordering?

Yes. We keep the Mermet sample books in the Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and the Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150), and we bring the colours you shortlist to the in-home consultation so you can hold them against your glass in your own light.
