Every Mermet fabric, in one place
This is the whole Mermet range as we specify it: 357 colourways in 17 designs, from the vinyl-coated fiberglass solar screens that cover most South Florida glass to the reinforced-core weaves rated for a terrace, the PVC-free GreenScreen knits and the Twilight blackouts. Each design has its own page listing every colourway with its swatch, its openness factor and the published specification: composition, roll width, weight, thickness, UV blockage, Tv, Ts, Rs and As, solar heat gain coefficients, acoustic values, fire listings and certifications. We source Mermet directly rather than through a shade brand, cut and finish the fabric in our own workroom, and put it on Lutron, Somfy, Crestron, Vertilux or manual rollers from Miami to Palm Beach.
Mermet organises its catalogue by collection, which is how a mill thinks. We have organised it the way a window is decided: what the fabric has to do, then how open the weave is, then the colour. Mermet by the numbers
Woven in Cowpens, South Carolina
Mermet USA's plant opened in 1986 and has woven fiberglass sunscreen there since 2000. The Cowpens lines are on Mermet's own Made in USA list and are compliant with the Build America, Buy America Act and the Buy American Act. That is a written answer for a condo board, a hotel brand or a public project.
KOOLBLACK on the charcoals
Mermet's heat-reflective technology, developed with BASF and launched in 2012, gives dark yarn a near-infrared reflectance of 64% against 3% for a conventional charcoal. It runs on E Screen at 0.5%, 1%, 3%, 5% and 10% and on T Screen at 1% and 3%, five charcoal colours in each.
Fire listings and certifications
The fiberglass and vinyl lines carry NFPA 701 TM#1, California Title 19 and CAN/ULC-S109; the polyester Daylight and Twilight weaves carry ASTM E84 and California Technical Bulletin 117 instead. GREENGUARD Gold and RoHS lead free run across the library, and GreenScreen adds Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze and a Declare Label.
Openness and width
E Screen weaves 0.5%, 1%, 3%, 5% and 10%; M Screen 1%, 3% and 5%; T Screen 1% and 3%; S Screen 1% and 4%, with Naturals at 5%; Natté 3%, 5% and 10%; Satiné 1% and 5%. The Daylight weaves are under 1% and the Twilights are 0%. Rolls run to 126 inches, 122 on the fiberglass screens.
Charcoal that reflects heat like a light colour
Until 2012 a dark solar screen was a trade: the sharpest view and the least glare, paid for in heat. KOOLBLACK is Mermet's answer to that trade, and it is the reason we can say yes when a client asks for charcoal on ocean glass.
Black yarn absorbs the sun, warms up and radiates that warmth back into the room. KOOLBLACK is a patented formulation, developed with BASF over five years and launched in June 2012, that gives dark yarn the ability to reflect the near-infrared part of sunlight, the part you feel but cannot see. The charcoal stays charcoal; the heat goes back out through the glass.
The figures are Mermet's own. A KOOLBLACK charcoal reflects 64% of the near-infrared that reaches it, against 3% for a conventional charcoal weave. Mermet publishes total solar reflectance up to 40% on E Screen with KOOLBLACK and up to 69% on the T Screen version, a solar heat gain coefficient improvement of up to 24% on E Screen and up to 55% on T Screen, and a fabric that runs up to 15 degrees cooler. Colour by colour, the spec sheets put the E Screen KOOLBLACK charcoals at Rs 28 to 40 where the same colours in plain E Screen sit between 3 and 10.
Everything that made you want charcoal stays. Visible light through the weave runs 1% to 15% on E Screen KOOLBLACK and 2% to 6% on T Screen KOOLBLACK, so the glare control and the clear read of the water are what a plain dark screen gives. UV blockage runs from about 90% at the open end to 99.5% at 0.5%. The base cloth is the same 36% fiberglass and 64% vinyl, woven in Cowpens on the same looms, in the same widths, with the same NFPA 701 TM#1, California Title 19 and CAN/ULC-S109 listings, GREENGUARD Gold and RoHS lead free.
It launched on E Screen at 3% and 5%, gained the 1% weave and today's five-colour palette in 2017, and T Screen with KOOLBLACK followed with a satin weave and a charcoal heat-reflective street side, in 3% and, from 2017, 1%. Mermet now lists E Screen KOOLBLACK across all five E Screen openness factors and T Screen KOOLBLACK at 1% and 3%, so a house can run one KOOLBLACK colour and change only the weave from elevation to elevation.
Heat reflected, not absorbed
Roughly half of the sun's energy arrives as near-infrared light, invisible but felt as heat. Plain black yarn soaks it up and re-radiates it into the room; KOOLBLACK yarn sends most of it back out. Mermet's figure is 64% near-infrared reflectance against 3% for the conventional weave, and a fabric up to 15 degrees cooler.
The dark-fabric view, kept
At the same openness, view clarity depends on the colour of the yarn: a dark weave reads as a clear window, a light weave as a bright screen. KOOLBLACK changes what the yarn does with invisible near-infrared, not with visible light, so a 3% charcoal still shows the water the way a 3% charcoal always did.
One palette across the floor
E Screen KOOLBLACK pairs charcoal with charcoal, grey, grey-stone, cocoa or apricot; T Screen KOOLBLACK runs charcoal with white, grey-white, grey-stone, charcoal-steel or charcoal-iron. Both coordinate with the rest of their collection, so KOOLBLACK on the west and south glass and plain E Screen or T Screen on the shaded sides read as one specification.

Ocean-facing and west glass across Fort Lauderdale, Miami Beach and Palm Beach: 1% where the afternoon sun is hardest, 3% in living areas, on Lutron, Somfy or a manual chain. Is Mermet fabric made in the USA?
The Mermet lines we specify are. Mermet USA weaves E Screen, M Screen, T Screen, S Screen, Natté, Satiné and the GreenScreen Evolve and Revive lines in Cowpens, South Carolina, and lists them as Made in USA, compliant with the Build America, Buy America Act and the Buy American Act. The wider Mermet group also weaves in France, so if a project needs a specific line we confirm its origin in writing before ordering.
What is KOOLBLACK?
Mermet's heat-reflective technology for dark solar screens, developed with BASF and launched in 2012. A standard charcoal absorbs the solar heat that hits it; a KOOLBLACK weave reflects a large share of the near-infrared, so it stays cooler and performs closer to a light colour while keeping the clearest view. It is our default on hard ocean and west glass, and every colourway is on the KOOLBLACK page.
Which Mermet fabric should I choose?
E Screen for most glass, 3% in living areas and 1% on hard west or south-west exposures; T Screen when a softer satin look is wanted or the street side has to be a different colour; M Screen for a warmer linen-toned palette; S Screen when the shade should read as a textile; Elba or Sofia when a room needs light-filtering privacy with a matching blackout; GreenScreen Evolve when the specification asks for no vinyl. We bring the books and decide window by window.
How wide can one Mermet shade be?
Sparta Twilight and Zora Twilight come 126 inches wide; the fiberglass screens (E Screen, T Screen, S Screen, the Deco weaves, Natté and Satiné) 122 inches; GreenScreen, Sofia and Elba 118; Vizela and Flocké 94.5. M Screen, S Screen Naturals and M Screen Deco are 98. Beyond the roll width an opening is covered by two shades on one headrail, aligned at a mullion. The master blackout at Salato is 144 by 120 inches with a single seam.
Can I get Mermet on a Somfy, Lutron or manual shade?
Yes. We source Mermet directly, so the same fabric goes on Lutron, Somfy, Crestron, Vertilux or a manual chain, cut and finished in our Fort Lauderdale workroom without waiting on a mill run. The fabric decision and the motor decision are separate, and we settle them in that order.
Is Mermet certified for high-rise and commercial use?
The fiberglass and vinyl lines carry NFPA 701 TM#1, California Title 19 and CAN/ULC-S109 flame listings plus GREENGUARD Gold and RoHS lead free; the polyester Daylight and Twilight weaves carry ASTM E84 and California Technical Bulletin 117, and Sparta Twilight is the blackout that keeps the NFPA 701 listing. Mermet or Phifer?
Both are certified mills weaving in the American South, and we stock both. Mermet brings KOOLBLACK, the widest openness range on one card in E Screen, the reversible T Screen satin and the reinforced-core outdoor weaves; Phifer SheerWeave brings the Microban additive, 126-inch rolls across most of the range and the exterior SunTex family. The real comparison is a certified fabric against an anonymous screen, not one mill against the other.
