Battery vs. 24V vs. 120V: Which Shade Motor Is Right for You?

Every motorized shade project starts with one decision that most people never hear about until it is too late to change: how the motor gets its power. Battery, 24V low-voltage, or 120V hardwired. Get this right and your shades run silently for decades. Get it wrong and you are either opening walls or charging batteries you did not expect. Here is the straight answer.
The three families, in one minute
Battery motors carry a rechargeable lithium battery inside the shade tube. No wiring, no electrician, no construction. They install in an afternoon and recharge with a simple plug-in wand, typically after months or even years of normal use.
24V low-voltage motors are wired, but with thin, safe, low-voltage cable. The wires run back to a discreet power supply or a central power panel that can feed many shades at once. This is the quietest family and the professional standard for new construction.
120V hardwired motors run on regular house current, wired by an electrician to a junction box at the window. They deliver the most torque, which makes them the choice for oversized shades, heavy fabrics, and exterior screens.
Battery: the retrofit king
If your home is already built, battery is usually the answer. Somfy's WireFree range and Lutron's wire-free motors (Palladiom wire-free, Triathlon, Serena) install with zero wiring, which also means zero drywall repair, zero electrician invoices, and in most Miami and Fort Lauderdale condos, zero association construction approvals.
The honest trade-offs: batteries eventually need recharging, and how often depends on the size of the shade and how many times a day it moves. A bedroom shade that cycles twice a day can run years between charges; a big living-room shade on an automated schedule will ask for power sooner. And on very wide or very heavy treatments, battery torque reaches its limit, which is where wired motors take over.
24V low-voltage: the quiet professional
This is the family most people have never heard of, and it is the one we specify most in new construction and full renovations. Low-voltage DC motors, like Somfy's Sonesse DC range and the motors behind Lutron's Sivoia QS system, are the quietest on the market. The power comes from a central panel or compact power supplies, so there is never a battery to think about, ever.
Because the cable is low-voltage, it is thin, flexible, and far less costly to run than electrical conduit. The catch is simple: the wire has to be in the wall before the drywall closes. If you are building or renovating, this is your window, and it is exactly why we ask to be brought in at the plan stage. One power panel can quietly run an entire floor of shades for decades.
120V: the heavy lifter
Line-voltage motors plug into the same 120V current as everything else in your home. No transformer, no panel, maximum torque. That strength matters on oversized floor-to-ceiling shades, heavy blackout systems with side channels, and exterior screens that fight wind and weather.
The trade-offs: an electrician must bring power to each window, and 120V motors are generally not as whisper-quiet as their low-voltage cousins. In practice we reserve 120V for the windows that truly need the muscle and use quieter options everywhere else.
The decision, simplified
Existing home or condo, standard window sizes: battery. New construction or renovation with walls open: 24V low-voltage, wired once, silent forever. Oversized, heavy, or exterior treatments: 120V where the torque is needed. Most whole-home projects end up as a smart mix of all three, and that is not a compromise, it is good engineering.

What we actually installed, family by family

Battery, because the walls were closed.
- Luxury Home, Boca Raton - fourteen Lutron Sivoia QS Triathlon battery rollers in Aura screen, D batteries in the headrail, roughly two to four years between changes by Lutron's estimate. No wiring into the walls anywhere. This is the answer when the house is already built.
24V low-voltage, because we were there before the drywall.
- Bay Drive, Pompano Beach and The Hemispheres, Hallandale Beach - Somfy Sonesse 30 Zigbee, 24V DC, on every shade. At the Hemispheres the whole wraparound rises as one line, including a 110-inch shade on a reinforced tube, with about two and a half inches of ceiling to work with.
- Hillsboro Mile, Turnberry Ocean Club, Ritz-Carlton Sunny Isles, Ritz-Carlton Residences, Miami Beach and six villas on Big Ambergris Cay - Lutron Sivoia QS wired rollers and drapery tracks, power and data on one low-voltage run, under HomeWorks QS, Crestron or, in the villas, myRoom XR. Fourteen openings at Hillsboro with no batteries behind any of them.
- Oceanfront estate, Fort Lauderdale - Lutron Palladiom wired rollers on every window of a 12,000 sq ft house, under 35 dBA.
- Trump Tower III, Sunny Isles and St. Regis Longboat Key - Crestron 24V DC roller and drapery motors on Cresnet, every treatment living natively in the home's scenes.
120V, because the shades were big.
- Salato, Pompano Beach - Somfy Sonesse 50 RTS, 120V, hard-wired through the building's conduit to a power panel in each unit, on 2.5-inch aluminum tubes, the largest made for interior shades. The same residence on three floors.
- Landmark Ranch Estates, Southwest Ranches - Somfy Sonesse 50 dry-contact motors, 120V, driving coupled shades of up to four tubes on one motor across a 22-foot wall of glass, with Glydea 60 wired tracks on every drapery, all hard-wired into the home's Lutron keypads.
Look down the list: one battery project, a dozen wired. That is not a bias, it is who calls us - new construction and full renovations, where the wire goes in before the drywall and the owner never thinks about power again. When the walls are already closed, battery wins, and we install it gladly.
