Architectural honeycomb in five cool colours, light-filtering or blackout

Kyoto is one of the three fabrics in Lutron's Architectural Honeycomb Collection: a 100% polyester single-cell honeycomb, PVC-free, 96 inches wide, in five colours (Stone, Fog, Ash, Slate, Pewter). The light-filtering version has a published R-value of 3.8; Kyoto Blackout, in the same five colours, reaches 4.4.

Honeycomb fabrics are cleaned by vacuuming only and are not seamed or railroaded; 96 inches is the maximum shade width.

What Kyoto does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Kyoto is a decision between two cells in the same five greys. Take the light-filtering weave where the room is used in daylight and the glow is wanted: a study, a sitting room, a north-facing bedroom nobody sleeps late in. Take Kyoto Blackout, at R 4.4 the top of the Architectural card, for the rooms that have to go dark and stay cool, and for glass that runs hot from two o'clock on.

Privacy

In daylight the light-filtering cell closes the window in both directions. Nobody sees in, and you see nothing out. After dark it turns around: a lamp behind Stone or Fog puts a legible silhouette on the cloth for anyone facing the window, and Slate or Pewter only softens it. Kyoto Blackout removes the silhouette altogether. On a standard headrail the jambs still leak light, though not the view.

Glare control

Lutron publishes no transmission values for its honeycombs, so judge Kyoto by cell and by colour. The cell breaks the direct beam completely and the room lights evenly, with no hot patch on a floor. What replaces the beam is a glowing panel: Stone and Fog light up, Slate and Pewter stay quieter behind a television. For a projector, only the blackout cell is dark enough.

Limitations

There is no view out through a honeycomb at any hour, which is the trade for the insulation, and it is the wrong product on the window you bought the apartment for. Cleaning is vacuuming only, with no damp cloth and no spot cleaning listed, so kitchens and baths are the wrong rooms. Nothing seams or railroads past 96 inches. See rollers against honeycombs.

A honeycomb is the shade we recommend when insulation is the point: a west-facing bedroom over a garage, a converted lanai, a home office that runs hot.
