A light, open polyester sheer in five colours

Monomer is a 100% polyester weave at over 10% openness, the sheer end of Lutron's light-filtering range: five colours (White, Off White, Dusk, Nutmeg, Dark Grey), 92 inches wide, seamable and railroadable, PVC-free, and very light at under 4 oz per square yard. It sits at the lower end of Lutron's price scale.

Because it is railroadable, a 92-inch fabric can still cover a wider opening in one piece.

Best Use & Limits

What Monomer does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Monomer is the cheapest way to put a sheer roller in a room that asks little of it, such as a hallway, a laundry or a guest bath facing a neighbour's wall. It suits a covered terrace door where the aim is to soften light rather than manage it. At 0.0074 inches and 3.704 oz it is one of the thinnest and lightest cloths Lutron lists, so it rolls very small.

Privacy

Over 10% openness gives you very little. By day a shape close to the glass is visible from outside; at night, with the room lit, the window reads almost as though nothing were on it. That is the honest answer, and it is the reason not to specify Monomer for a bathroom, a ground-floor bedroom or any window a neighbour looks straight at. Those rooms need a blackout.

Glare control

No transmission figures are published, and at over 10% openness there would not be much to report. Sun comes through as a diffused beam and the panel glows, most of all in White and Off White. Dusk, Nutmeg and Dark Grey hold a little more back. None of them makes a laptop readable on a west-facing kitchen island in the late afternoon.

Limitations

Lutron publishes no fire rating for Monomer, so it does not belong on a hotel, clinic or lobby specification, and the commercial range is where that work goes. Cleaning is dusting and vacuuming only. Width stops at 92 inches, though the cloth railroads. The low price band buys a fabric that diffuses light and does nothing else, which is fine if that is all you wanted.

Where Monomer works here

A soft, affordable sheer roller for the secondary rooms of a house or for a covered terrace door where the aim is to diffuse light, not to block it. Where the sun is direct, we would use a screen instead or add one behind it.

Good to Know

Monomer: frequently asked

Monomer or Bistre?

Both are open, sheer-like weaves. Bistre is Trevira CS with fire listings and a 116-inch width; Monomer is a lighter, lower-cost polyester at 92 inches. For a commercial job choose Bistre; for a guest room, Monomer is fine.

How wide can a Lutron Monomer shade be?

Lutron publishes a maximum usable fabric width of 92 inches for Monomer. It is railroadable, so a wider opening can be covered in one piece by turning the fabric. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.

Which Lutron shades use Monomer?

Monomer is made up on Lutron roller shades. As a certified Lutron dealer in Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach we order it for any Lutron system it is offered on and install it with our own team.
