Every Phifer shade fabric, in one place
This is the whole Phifer range as we specify it: 526 colourways in 30 designs, covering the interior SheerWeave solar screens, the 7000 series blackouts with their light-filtering twins, and the exterior SunTex and SunScreen fabrics that hang outside the glass. Each design has its own page listing every colourway with its swatch, its openness factor and the published specification: composition, roll widths, weight, UV blockage, Tv, Ts, Rs and As, solar heat gain coefficients, fire listings and certifications. We source Phifer directly rather than through a shade brand, cut and finish the fabric in our own workroom, and put it on Lutron, Somfy, Crestron, Vertilux or manual rollers from Miami to Palm Beach.
Phifer's catalogue is organised by style number, which is how a mill thinks. We have organised it the way a window is actually decided: what the fabric has to do, then how open the weave is, then the colour. Phifer by the numbers
Woven in Tuscaloosa since 1952
Phifer has woven in Tuscaloosa, Alabama since 1952, when J. Reese Phifer founded the company, and its main manufacturing and specialty weaving facilities are still there. When a client asks where the fabric comes from, that is an answer we can give without hedging.
Microban, GREENGUARD Gold, lead free
Most SheerWeave styles carry a Microban antimicrobial additive worked into the fabric, which is what keeps a pale screen looking clean a block from the water. Across the library Phifer publishes GREENGUARD Gold certification, RoHS and REACH compliance and the ANSI/WCMA A100.1 standard for lead content.
Openness from 0.1% to 25%
SheerWeave Privacy is woven at 0.1% and still reads as a daylight fabric; SheerWeave 1000, SunTex 80 and SunScreen are 25% and keep almost the whole view. Between them sit the 1%, 3%, 5% and 10% screens that do the work on South Florida glass, plus the 14% SheerWeave 3000.
126 inches at the widest
126 inches is the widest roll Phifer publishes, on the 2500 and 2701 families, 4000 Eco, 4500/4600, 4800, SheerWeave Basic, Privacy and SunTex 95/97/99. The polyester blackouts and their light-filtering twins run 118 inches, as do SheerWeave 8000 and RE-USE. Width is what decides whether a wide slider is one shade or two.
An American mill, and what it means on Florida glass
Phifer is the rare fabric company that still weaves in the town where it started. The details that matter here are not the ones on the brochure: they are the additive in the yarn, the openness of the weave and whether the fabric goes inside the glass or outside it.
The company has manufactured in Tuscaloosa, Alabama since 1952, and the majority of SheerWeave roller-shade fabrics are woven there. Phifer also operates plants abroad, so where a project requires domestic origin we confirm the origin of the exact style in writing before we order. That is a short conversation with this mill and a long one with most others.
SheerWeave earns its place in our workroom on the things a coastal climate punishes. Most styles carry a Microban antimicrobial additive that works in the fabric itself against bacteria, mold and mildew, and Phifer publishes the fungal and bacterial test methods behind it (ASTM E 2180, ASTM G21, ASTM G22, ASTM D 3273, AATCC 30 Part 3 and the GREENGUARD Mold and Bacteria Standard). On a slider that fogs every morning between November and April, that is not a footnote.
The other half of the range never comes indoors. SunTex and SunScreen are exterior fabrics: they stop the sun at the outside face of the glass rather than after it has already come through, which is why Phifer publishes solar heat gain coefficients as low as 0.09 for SunTex 99 behind single glazing. Those exterior figures are measured with the fabric outside the glass at a 30 degree profile angle, and they are the reason a terrace or a west wall is usually an exterior problem, not an interior one.
Microban, where Phifer lists it
The 2000, 2500, 2701, 3000, 4000 Eco, 4500, 4550, 4800, 4901, 5000, 5500, Basic, Privacy and 1000 screens carry it, as do every SunTex style and, among the blackouts, Style 7100 alone. The polyester 7000 series, 8000, Infinity2 and RE-USE are listed with test methods but no Microban additive.
No vinyl in the composition
SheerWeave 7001 is the one style Phifer labels PVC-Free in the composition itself: 100% polyester with an acrylic flocked backing. SheerWeave 8000 (100% polyester, Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze), Infinity2 (100% TPO), RE-USE (85% REPREVE recycled polyester) and the polyester blackouts and light-filtering twins of the 7000 series all publish compositions with no vinyl in them.
Bio-based plasticizer in the Eco weaves
The 4000 Eco family and SheerWeave Privacy are vinyl on polyester, made with DOW ECOLIBRIUM bio-based plasticizer. Phifer publishes that over half of the compound comes from crop-based feed stocks and minerals and over two thirds from non fossil fuel based materials. Vinyl, but not conventional vinyl.
Fire listings on nearly everything
Most SheerWeave screens carry California Title 19, NFPA 701 TM#1 and TM#2, NFPA 101 Class A, IBC Section 803.1.1 Class A, BS 5867 Part 2 Type B and CAN/ULC-S 109. The exceptions matter: SheerWeave 5000 publishes no fire listing at all, and 5500, 7200R, 7500R and 7700R go no further than California Technical Bulletin 117 with, at most, a Class B rating.

Is Phifer SheerWeave made in the USA?

What is Microban and why does it matter in Florida?
Microban is an antimicrobial additive built into the fabric that works continuously against bacteria, mold and mildew. Near the ocean and the Intracoastal, where sliders fog every morning, it is what keeps a pale screen looking clean for years instead of seasons. Phifer lists it on most SheerWeave styles and on every SunTex style; the design pages show which.
Which Phifer fabrics have no PVC in them?
SheerWeave 7001 is the style Phifer labels PVC-Free in its published composition. SheerWeave 8000 is 100% polyester and Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze, Infinity2 is 100% TPO, RE-USE is 85% REPREVE recycled polyester, and the polyester blackouts and light-filtering twins of the 7000 series are polyester with acrylic coatings and backings. They are all collected on our PVC-free and recycled fabrics page.
What is the difference between SheerWeave and SunTex?
SheerWeave is the interior range: solar screens, blackouts and light-filtering weaves for a roller shade inside the room. SunTex and SunScreen are exterior fabrics, made to hang outside the glass on a terrace or patio shade, where they stop the sun before it reaches the window. The exterior fabrics publish far lower solar heat gain coefficients for exactly that reason.
SheerWeave or Mermet?
Both are certified mills weaving in the American South, and we stock both. Mermet E Screen with KOOLBLACK is our default on hard ocean glass; Phifer brings four openness factors on one colour card, the Microban additive, the widest rolls at 126 inches and the exterior SunTex range. The real comparison is a certified fabric against an anonymous screen, not one mill against the other.
Can I get Phifer fabric on a Somfy, Lutron or manual shade?
Yes. We source Phifer directly, so the same fabric goes on Lutron, Somfy, Crestron, Vertilux or a manual chain, cut and finished in our Fort Lauderdale workroom. The fabric decision and the motor decision are separate, and we settle them in that order.
Can I see the fabric before ordering?
Yes. Tell us the colours you are considering and we bring the Phifer books and the samples to the consultation. The workroom at 4539 Powerline Rd in Fort Lauderdale is open by appointment and the Miami Beach showroom at 500 South Pointe Dr #150 has shades running, so you can see a weave on a real motorized roller before you commit to it.

Phifer is on our own projects up and down the coast. At an oceanfront residence on Bay Drive in Pompano Beach, five Somfy Sonesse 30 Zigbee rollers run in one line across the beach-facing glass in SheerWeave 4000 Eco 5%, colour Eco/Alabaster, with a 7200R blackout in Swan in the primary suite. At a golf course home in Boca Raton the guest house carries SheerWeave 2500 at 1% in Charcoal on Somfy Sonesse 30 RTS motors, where the glare off the fairway was the whole brief.
