A blackout with the two-tone look of a solar screen

Blackout Screen is a 78% PVC, 22% polyester fabric that takes the two-tone colour language of the screen range (Charcoal/Brown, Charcoal/Grey, Charcoal/Light Grey, Pearl/Oyster, Pearl/Grey, Pearl/Dark Grey, plus Charcoal, Grey and Pearl) and makes it fully opaque, with a matching coloured back. It is 116 inches wide, heavy (16 to 19 oz per square yard), seamable and railroadable, anti-microbial, rated for moist conditions and listed to NFPA 701. Added in 2025.

Best Use & Limits

What Blackout Screen does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Read the reflectance before the colourway. Pearl reflects 65% of the solar energy that hits it, where Charcoal reflects 4%. On west and south glass in a Miami tower the pale end of this card is what keeps heat off the room, even though the charcoals look better next to a screen. It is also the blackout Lutron rates for moist conditions, which is why it goes into bathrooms.

Privacy

The name confuses people, so plainly: there is no openness here and no view through it at any hour. It looks like a two-tone screen and behaves like a blackout, with full visual cover day and night in all nine colourways. Because the back is coloured to match rather than left white, the shade reads as the same fabric from a terrace. Edge light at the jambs is unchanged.

Glare control

Nothing passes, so there is no glare to manage while the shade is down. The reason to take a charcoal face in a media room is that a dark surface around the screen does not throw light back at it. The cost of that choice is heat, since absorptance at the charcoal end of the card reaches 94% and the cavity behind the glass warms up.

Limitations

It is 78% PVC, so a project working to a no-PVC materials list cannot use it and Element is the alternative. At up to 19.47 oz and 0.028 inches it is a heavy, thick cloth, which means a bigger roll and a deeper pocket on a tall shade. Neither a GREENGUARD nor a lead-free listing is published for it.

Where Blackout Screen works here

This is the blackout to pair with a charcoal or pearl screen when you want both layers to look like the same family, and the blackout we specify for bathrooms and lanai-facing rooms where humidity rules out a polyester designer blackout. Charcoal/Grey behind a Charcoal/Grey E Screen is a common combination on Sunny Isles glass.

Good to Know

Blackout Screen: frequently asked

Can Blackout Screen go in a bathroom?

Yes. It is a vinyl fabric rated by Lutron for moist conditions, which the polyester blackouts are not. It is also the natural match for a vinyl screen in the same window.

How wide can a Lutron Blackout Screen shade be?

Lutron publishes a maximum usable fabric width of 116 inches for Blackout Screen. It is railroadable, so a wider opening can be covered in one piece by turning the fabric. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.

Which Lutron shades use Blackout Screen?

Blackout Screen is made up on Lutron roller shades. As a certified Lutron dealer in Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach we order it for any Lutron system it is offered on and install it with our own team.

Can I see Blackout Screen samples before ordering?
