The basic PVC-coated blackout, for rollers and tensioned shades

Standard is exactly what its name says: a 25% fiberglass, 75% PVC-coated blackout in six colours (White, Oyster, Cream, Champagne, Grey, Black) with matching coloured backs, at the bottom of Lutron's price scale. It is 70 inches wide, seamable and railroadable, GREENGUARD and lead-free certified, listed to NFPA 701 and CA Title 19, and available on both roller and tensioned shades.

The 70-inch width is the narrowest of the blackouts, so it is railroaded or split on wide openings.

Best Use & Limits

What Standard does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Standard is a width decision more than a fabric decision. Below 70 inches it is the cheapest way to get full darkness, and it is the second Lutron blackout listed for tensioned shades, so a small skylight, a transom over a stair or a run of identical bedroom windows in a rental building is where it pays. It is 25% fiberglass and 75% PVC coating, and it looks like what it costs.

Privacy

Closed at 0% transmission, and the backs match the faces, so a Black shade is black on both sides and a service or plant-room window goes dark without showing a white panel to the street. The usual roller caveat holds at both jambs. On anything wider than 70 inches the joint between two shades is where the light and the darkness give way first.

Glare control

No light passes, so there is no glare to discuss while the shade is down. At 0.0128 inches it is thin for a blackout, which is what lets it roll small enough for the tight tubes and shallow cassettes that small windows and skylight wells tend to come with. On a sunny window the Black colourway takes up heat that the pale ones send back.

Limitations

Seventy inches is the real constraint, and a seam or a second shade on a window people look at will read as the economy it is. It is a PVC-coated cloth, which a no-PVC specification rules out, and the six colourways are utility neutrals front and back rather than a designer card. Where the window is on show, Encore or Premiere is worth the difference.

Where Standard works here

Standard is for the utility windows of a project: a laundry, a garage office, a small skylight over a stair, a bathroom that needs full darkness and full humidity resistance at the lowest cost. On show windows we would move up to Premiere, Encore or one of the designer blackouts.

Good to Know

Standard: frequently asked

Is Standard suitable for a bedroom?

It blocks light completely and is fine for a small bedroom window. On a large or visible window a wider, softer blackout such as Encore or Luna will look better and avoid the seam.

How wide can a Lutron Standard shade be?

Lutron publishes a maximum usable fabric width of 70 inches for Standard. It is railroadable, so a wider opening can be covered in one piece by turning the fabric. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.

Which Lutron shades use Standard?

Standard is made up on Lutron roller shades and tensioned skylight shades. Colourways approved for tensioned shades can also cover skylights and sloped glass. As a certified Lutron dealer in Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach we order it for any Lutron system it is offered on and install it with our own team.

Can I see Standard samples before ordering?

Yes. Lutron makes memo samples of every Standard colourway on this page; tell us which colours you are considering and we order them from Lutron for your consultation. Both our Fort Lauderdale workroom (by appointment) and our Miami Beach showroom have Lutron shades running so you can see the fabrics in motion.
