The two-tone basketweave with a white or black back
Basketweave 27 is a fiberglass-core screen (about 36% fiberglass, 64% vinyl on fiberglass) available in 1%, 3%, 5% and 10% openness, up to 124 inches wide, on both roller and tensioned shades. Its 44 colourways are built from two faces, Oyster and Charcoal, combined with Beige, Pewter, Chestnut, Pearl Grey, Brown, Grey, Slate and Taupe, and each has either a white or a black back. Pick the face for the room and the back for the facade: a white-backed Oyster reads as a uniform light band from the street, a black-backed Charcoal disappears into dark glass.
It is one of the few screens Lutron offers on tensioned shades, which makes Basketweave 27 a natural choice when a house has both vertical windows and skylights and you want one fabric throughout. Fire listings are NFPA 701, CA Title 19 and CAN/ULC-S109.
What Basketweave 27 does on your glass, and what it does not
Best use
Work the openness against the exposure and hold the colour constant. Charcoal or Charcoal/Grey at 1% belongs on west glass and in any room with a monitor. Oyster at 3% is the living-room default over the water. Oyster at 10%, passing 32% of the visible light, is a north-facing or courtyard fabric and nothing else. On a high floor with no shading, take the tighter weave.
Privacy
The range here is unusually wide, so read the figure before you choose. Oyster at 10% passes 32% of the visible light and gives almost no daytime cover. The same Oyster at 1% passes 17% and reflects 64%, which is enough to keep a facing balcony from reading the room. The charcoals see out best and hide least. After dark every one of the 44 colourways shows a lit room.
Glare control
Openness carries this one. At 1% the Charcoal, Charcoal/Grey and Charcoal/Slate weaves publish 3% to 4% visible transmission and a monitor stays workable with the sun on the glass. At 5% and 10% expect light on a television whatever the colour: Oyster/Beige at 10% publishes 28%. Darker and tighter is the rule, and none of it removes a low sun from the window.
Limitations
No screen darkens a room and this one is no exception at any of its four openness factors. Lutron lists it for dusting, vacuuming and spot cleaning only, not for a damp cloth, which is worth knowing above a kitchen sink. Published NRC runs 0.05 to 0.15, so it does next to nothing for echo. A bedroom needs a blackout shade as well.

We specify Basketweave 27 on projects where the building's outside appearance is governed, which in South Florida means most condo towers and many HOA communities: the back colour is chosen to match what the association allows and the face colour is chosen for the interior. Why do some Basketweave 27 colours have a black back?
The back is what the outside sees. A black back makes the shade vanish behind tinted glass and sharpens the view from inside; a white back keeps a light, uniform facade. Many condo associations specify one or the other, and we match it.
