Nine colours, three openness factors, from the Sustainable Solar Screens range

Basketweave 4000 Eco is a polyester-core basketweave (25% polyester, 75% vinyl on polyester) that Lutron lists under its Sustainable Solar Screens. Nine colours (Chalk, Alabaster, Pebblestone, Greystone, Granite, Pewter, Ash, Ebony, Tobacco) come in 3%, 5% and 10%, widths run to 96 or 124 inches depending on the colour, and it is seamable and railroadable. Visible light transmission spans 2% to 16%, so the same fabric covers a glare-critical room at 3% and a view room at 10%.

It is heavier than the fiberglass screens (up to about 20 oz per square yard) and hangs very flat, which shows on wide rollers. Fire listings are NFPA 701, CA Title 19 and CAN/ULC-S109; certifications include GREENGUARD and RoHS.

The mill: Phifer, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Lutron's Basketweave 4000 Eco is Phifer's SheerWeave 4000 Eco weave, made with DOW ECOLIBRIUM bio-based plasticizers; Phifer weaves the majority of its SheerWeave roller-shade fabrics in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with Microban antimicrobial protection and GREENGUARD certification. It is one of the two mills behind our fabric standard; with direct supply, the same weave is available on Somfy and manual shades, not only on Lutron.

Best Use & Limits

What Basketweave 4000 Eco does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Lutron rates this one for moist conditions, which puts it on lanai doors, pool baths and the covered terraces that chew through ordinary fabrics in a Florida summer. Take 3% on anything with direct sun, 5% under a deep overhang, 10% on the shaded side of the house. It is a roller fabric only, so skylights and sloped glass need a different weave from the same library.

Privacy

There is no 1% weave here, so daylight cover comes down to colour. Chalk at 3% reflects 70% of the solar energy that lands on it and reads as a pale panel from the terrace. Ebony reflects 3%, gives the sharpest view out and hides the least. Chalk at 10% passes 15% of the visible light and hides very little either way. Nothing on the card works once the lamps are on.

Glare control

The 3% end does the work. Pewter, Tobacco and Ebony at 3% publish 2% to 3% visible transmission, which is enough for a monitor to stay usable with sun on the glass. At 10% every colour lands in the teens and a television will show a reflection. If glare is the reason you are shopping, this card starts at 3% and the tighter weaves live elsewhere. Low sun still comes through.

Limitations

It starts at 3%, so it is not the fabric for a media room or a wall of monitors. It is thick and heavy, which builds a fatter roll on a tall shade than a fiberglass screen does: settle the pocket depth before you order. It darkens nothing and hides nothing after dark, and at an NRC of 0.05 to 0.2 it will not quiet a hard room.

South Florida

Where Basketweave 4000 Eco works here

This is the fabric we recommend when a client wants the sand-and-stone palette of a coastal interior rather than pure white or charcoal: Pebblestone, Greystone and Granite sit naturally against limestone and pale oak. On Sunny Isles and Hallandale glass we generally hold it at 3% or 5%; 10% is for the shaded side of the building.

Good to Know

Basketweave 4000 Eco: frequently asked

Is Basketweave 4000 Eco PVC-free?

No. It is a vinyl-on-polyester screen; Lutron places it in the Sustainable Solar Screens range for its construction, not as a PVC-free fabric. If PVC-free is the requirement, look at Basketweave Eco2, GreenScreen Evolve or Sheerweave 8000.

How wide can a Lutron Basketweave 4000 Eco shade be?

Lutron publishes a maximum usable fabric width of 124 inches or 96 inches for Basketweave 4000 Eco. It is railroadable, so a wider opening can be covered in one piece by turning the fabric. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.
