A dense 1% weave in twelve solid colours

Basketweave is the tightest of Lutron's basketweave screens: a 1% openness polyester and vinyl fabric in twelve solid colours (Chalk, Alabaster, Pearl, Sand, Mocha, Taupe, Ebony, Grey, Fleece, Clay, Mink and Flint), 96 inches wide, seamable and railroadable. Visible light transmission runs from near zero in the dark colours to 6% in the lightest, which makes it the most glare-proof screen on this page that still keeps a trace of the view.

Because the colours are solid rather than two-tone, it reads as a plain, even surface from inside and out, and the 18.5 oz weight gives it a substantial, flat hang on large rollers. Lutron lists it under the Classico and Commercial collections with NFPA 701 and CA Title 19 fire ratings.

Best Use & Limits

What Basketweave does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Standard windows rather than slider walls, because at 96 inches a wall of glass becomes several shades. Chalk is the one for a hot unshaded elevation, reflecting 77% of the solar energy that lands on it. Ebony, Mink or Flint suit a west-facing study where the room should go quiet and the outside stay a faint shape. It is a roller fabric only, so skylights are out.

Privacy

This is about as much daytime cover as a solar screen gives. Clay, Mink, Flint and Ebony publish 0% visible transmission, so in daylight there is effectively nothing to read from the street and very little view out for you. Chalk at 6% keeps a trace of the outside both ways. Night is the same story as every screen: with the lamps on the room shows, and a bedroom needs a blackout layer behind.

Glare control

Glare is what you are buying. Visible transmission runs from 0% to 6% across the twelve colours, so a monitor, a television or a laptop on a kitchen island stays readable with sun on the glass, and the room goes soft rather than dim. The dark solids scatter the least light back inside. Even here, a low sun sitting square in the window still shows as a disc.

Limitations

In the dark solids you give up the view almost entirely, so do not put Ebony or Mink on the one window worth looking out of. It is a heavy cloth at 18.5 oz and rolls up thicker than a fiberglass screen, which matters in a shallow shade pocket. There is no tensioned version for sloped glass, and no openness factor here darkens a room.

South Florida

Where Basketweave works here

At the Ritz-Carlton Residences in Miami Beach the solar shades are Basketweave in Pearl, chosen because the rooms face the water on more than one side and a 1% weave was the only way to hold the glare without losing the sense of the bay. That is the profile: multi-exposure rooms, home offices with screens facing the glass, and rooms where a screen has to do most of the work on its own.

Good to Know

Basketweave: frequently asked

Is 1% openness too dark?

Not in South Florida. A 1% screen in a light colour still lets you read the horizon and keeps the room bright enough by day; it simply stops the glare. In a dark colour it becomes close to a light-filtering shade with a faint view. We show both in your room before you decide.

How wide can a Lutron Basketweave shade be?

Lutron publishes a maximum usable fabric width of 96 inches for Basketweave. It is railroadable, so a wider opening can be covered in one piece by turning the fabric. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.

Which Lutron shades use Basketweave?

Basketweave is made up on Lutron roller shades. As a certified Lutron dealer in Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach we order it for any Lutron system it is offered on and install it with our own team.
