The reference solar screen, in every openness Lutron makes
E Screen is the reference solar screen in Lutron's library and the one we reach for first on a wall of South Florida glass. It is a fiberglass and vinyl weave (36% fiberglass, 64% vinyl) that stays flat and dimensionally stable in humidity, rolls cleanly on tubes up to 120 inches wide, and comes in five openness factors: 0.5%, 1%, 3%, 5% and 10%. That range is the point. The same colour can be ordered tighter for a west-facing room and more open for a north-facing one, so a whole floor reads as one fabric while each window gets the glare control it actually needs.
The colour card is built on two-tone weaves: White/White, White/Pearl and White/Linen for bright, light-reflecting interiors; Pearl/Pearl, Pearl/Linen and Pearl/Grey for warmer neutrals; and the Charcoal family (Charcoal/Charcoal, Charcoal/Grey, Charcoal/Grey-Stone, Charcoal/Cocoa, Charcoal/Apricot) where view clarity matters most. Dark weaves are always the clearest to look through; light weaves reflect more heat. Lutron also lists E Screen in two special versions, E Screen THEIA (22 colourways at rated openness values between 1.1% and 4.6%) and E Screen with KOOLBLACK (15 charcoal colourways at 1%, 3% and 5%), both on the same 120-inch width.

It is one of the two mills behind our fabric standard; with direct supply, the same weave is available on Somfy and manual shades, not only on Lutron.
What E Screen does on your glass, and what it does not
Best use
Lutron lists E Screen on tensioned shades as well as rollers, so the same weave can go on a skylight or a sloped clerestory and match the vertical windows under it. Put 0.5% on a media room window and on any glass a monitor faces. Take 10% only where the exposure is already shaded. Where a specification asks for a rated openness rather than a nominal one, THEIA is the version to quote.
Privacy
Daytime cover is a colour decision, not an openness decision. The white and pearl faces throw daylight back, up to 78% solar reflectance at 0.5%, and that reflected light is what stops a facing balcony reading the room. Charcoal/Charcoal reflects 4%, sees out best and hides least. After dark all three families behave the same way: lamps on, room visible, so a bedroom takes a blackout layer behind on a dual roller.
Glare control
Openness is only half the answer. White/White at 10% publishes 22% visible transmission and will leave a reflection on a television; Charcoal/Grey at 1% publishes 2% and lets a monitor sit square to the glass all afternoon. Dark and tight wins, and KOOLBLACK gets you there without the heat a plain charcoal holds. No weave in this range removes the sun disc once it drops into the window.
Limitations
It does not darken a room, and even 0.5% is still a screen: nothing here closes a bedroom off at night. Above 120 inches an opening becomes a seamed shade or two shades. KOOLBLACK comes in charcoal only, so a pale room-side face with serious heat rejection is not on this card; the metal-backed OmniaScreen Silver is where to look. Plain charcoals absorb most of the sun they meet.

Where E Screen works here
On an ocean-facing wall in Sunny Isles or Fort Lauderdale we usually specify 3% or 5%: the horizon stays visible through the weave, the glare on a white sofa is gone, and the room stops heating up by mid-afternoon. At Turnberry Ocean Club the living spaces run Lutron Sivoia QS rollers in E Screen 5% White/Linen for exactly that reason. For a west-facing Intracoastal room, 1% or a KOOLBLACK charcoal is the better call: the KOOLBLACK charcoals reflect a far larger share of solar energy than a plain charcoal weave (solar reflectance in the 30s against single digits), so you keep the dark-fabric view without the dark-fabric heat.

Which E Screen openness should I choose for an ocean view?
3% or 5% for most South Florida exposures: the view stays readable through the weave and glare is controlled. Go to 1% on west-facing glass or where a TV faces the window, and 10% only on north-facing rooms where you want the maximum view and heat is not the problem. We order the Lutron samples of the colours you shortlist so you can judge them in your own light.
What is the difference between E Screen, E Screen THEIA and E Screen with KOOLBLACK?
Same 36% fiberglass, 64% vinyl base and the same 120-inch width. Standard E Screen comes in 0.5% to 10% openness. THEIA is Lutron's version with rated openness values such as 1.6% or 4.5% across 22 colourways. KOOLBLACK is the charcoal range with a heat-reflective construction, so a dark, see-through weave performs closer to a light one. We confirm which version suits the project when we quote.
How wide can a Lutron E Screen shade be?
Lutron publishes a maximum usable fabric width of 120 inches for E Screen. It can be seamed for wider openings, or two shades share one headrail and move together. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.
Which Lutron shades use E Screen?
E Screen is made up on Lutron roller shades and tensioned skylight shades. Colourways approved for tensioned shades can also cover skylights and sloped glass.
